The Sweet Smell of Christmas

As I was getting my breakfast this morning, I had the most amazing “blast from the past”.  Oddly enough this blast happened as I was cutting into my grapefruit.  The minute the smell of the ruby red grapefruit citrus hit my nose, I was transported back in time to when I was a little girl reading one of my most favorite books, The Sweet Smell of Christmas by Patricia Scarry.

Oh how I LOVED this book!  Not only was it centered around my favorite holiday but it also featured 6 scratch and sniff stickers.  SCRATCH AND SNIFF!!!! This sweet book shared the tale of Little Bear and Christmas being near.  Little Bear could smell it – and so could I! I can remember reading this book even after the scratch and sniff stickers had long been worn down but somehow still being able to smell the delicious flavors of hot chocolate, pine trees, apple pie, candy canes, gingerbread cookies and my most favorite, a fresh orange in Little Bears stocking!  Can you smell them too?

It’s funny how one little thing…one little trigger like the smell of a fresh cut grapefruit could evoke such sweet memories of a time gone by.  With a smile on my face, I started my day remembering fondly a treasured time from my youth and just like that felt like I was 5 years old once again with not a worry in the world and ready to embrace the joy of this holiday season.
